STEAM & ROBOTICS

Who is this Lovely New Professor in Robotics
that is taking the world by storm ?

OH WAIT !
She the ROBOT, Not the Professor.

The face of ROBOTICS is changing.

Robots are looking and speaking more like humans and less like the robots of the 20 century Hollywood Movie makes fantasies.

Can you image a class discussion based around Robotics today and NOT in University but in High School.  What about in Middle School ?  AND YES ! Primary school even.

What is my favorite courses that I gave at Sun YatSen University In Guangzhou China when I was a professor and lecture there, was on robotics.

No first understand. I am not an engineer I am not a robotics major. However am a human being and an educator.

So the interesting thing about robotics is anyone can talk about it. Anyone can insight and spark curiosity.

With that said basically what I would do. As I love the movie Bicentennial Man. This all came about randomly. I’ve seen the movie and I found a download of it. And what I did the first time is just play clips of it and then I talk about it. The movie is amazing there’s so many things about language and cultural and humor and also about a robot learning to be human.

I make a video clip one day and posted. So you could see the ideas behind. It was one of my most amazing classes and it was based with the movie and robotics.

Inquiry-based learning is very important. And I think project basis also very important. These are the processes of learning. The outcomes can always be varied and different they do not have to be the same.

One class might take the talk into the direction of the work place and people losing jobs. And the pork not having enough money.

Another class wait talk about do they want a robotic girlfriend or boyfriend. It which is really funny because it’s amazing some of the places they go with us. And then you find out who’s actually scared of a robot looking like a human being. It takes them in many directions this conversation.

Sometimes it’s a combination and it becomes a huge debate. And I love to put people that are for something else on the platform of against it. To see how they would talk against it and change the way they think. Be adaptable to thinking a different way even though they believe something else. Which is a great tool to have in life. It’s a great way to review things and see the pros and cons really in a situation.

This class was taking for beyond the idea of robotics and wear robotics will go. And what it will do and what impact it will have on the earth and people.

When you’re dealing with engineers. Now you can see their minds thinking more about everything that affects the robot and the world around it. Not just the impact of being able to do it. But the impact that has.

It’s very simple any class like this can be done this basic formula.

Class time:

Show movie clips , show a video, show a PPT about a topic.

Afterwords ask about 10 different questions. Questions can be ranging from say language. Why would a robot look human why would we do that? What would make you scared of a robot? Are there any jobs or robot can do that humans can’t with robots can do better? What is the impact on the poor if robots started taking the job of cleaning homes? What if… Ask questions Afterwords ask about 10 different questions. Questions can be ranging from say language. Why would a robot look human why would we do that? What would make you scared of a robot? Are there any jobs a robot can do that humans can’t robots can do better? What is the impact on the porch if robot started taking of the jobs of cleaning homes?

What if…

Ask questions in sigh, in sight debate.

In the class is simple. Follow their direction. What are they interested in talking about? And then follow them. Give them the tools to do about a class. Bring them into groups , small groups, divide the class in half , there are many ways to do it .

Remember your is your tool to an education.  Be a mentor more than a teacher .Period And let them go in different directions and help them to go there.

Every classes not just about memorizing facts, and taking test. It’s about learning and how to learn. And how to assess the good questions. And how to find the right answers.

You can do this with any age level from early childhood to university level. Even your colleagues to have some fun when you’re having lunch.

Explore education today and find out what you can do that is different in the classroom.
